A perfect beach day for bare feet on the sand. Tangy salt and chilled water recedes with the tide. I walk. I stroll.
I wear my bikini in November and squint through slanting light and wave mist.
Before sunset we load our towels and totes in the car. We drive east into a sky snowing ashes. Brush burns and flames lick up all the leftovers, the houses that were homes.
It is nine o'clock when we pull into our driveway.
